Director: Krista Vogelberg
Degrees awarded: Minor in American Studies.

This program aims to improve Estonia’s knowledge of the United States and North America in general. A minor degree in American studies is an option open to all students of the University, and has been used rather extensively in the four years of its existence. The Center has also been organizing international conferences to bring together scholars from Estonia and all over the world. Additionally, the Center supports a small library that serves as a resource center for the students and faculty of the University but also for anyone outside the institution. As American Studies as a discipline is virtually nonexistent in Estonia, the Center has relied on the support of specialists from various disciplines and departments (primarily the Department of English but also History, Political Science, Law, Economics and Sociology) which makes the program truly interdisciplinary.

Affiliations and Internships: Central Michigan U and Eastern Michigan U, Michigan; Ball State U, Indiana; Furman U and College of Charleston, South Carolina

American Studies starts from the premise that the life of the American nation is as richly visible in their arts, literature, folklore, philosophy, adversiting, law, education, business, entertainment, media, science, and religions as in their treaties, wars and politics. This program trains students to interrelate a number of these areas of expertise so that, as cultural analysts, they will understand American society, past and present, from an interdisciplinary perspective and in relation to European culture. The program also hosts an annual conference.

American Studies was established as an interdisciplinary major by the Faculty of Arts in 1988. The English and History departments form the pillars of this multidisciplinary program, with additional courses furnished by the departments of Art History, Film Studies, and Women’s Studies. American Studies at Utrecht is modelled after American Studies programs in the U.S. and basically explores the unique quality of American culture and history in all their multiple manifestations. American Studies at Utrecht employs a broad definition of culture; in addition to "high" art expressions in literature, film, and the visual arts, it also emphatically considers expressions of popular culture as legitimate subjects of study.

American Studies Faculty: Jaap Verheul (Ph.D. Duke) American literature; Maarten Van Rossem (Ph.D. Utrecht) American history, intellectual history; William Uricchio (Ph.D.) American television and film studies; Berteke Waaldijk (Ph.D. Utrecht) Women’s studies, American women’s history; Suzanne Harmsem (MA); D Rubin (Ph.D.); M L Waaldijk (Ph.D.).

The Maastricht Center (MCTS) was conceived in 1995 by representatives of twelve institutions across the United States, Mexico, and Europe, and offered its first teaching program in Spring, 1998. Based at Teikyo University Holland, the Maastricht Center offers two semester-length study-abroad programs plus a one-month summer program per year, focusing on a comparative, multidisciplinary approach to transatlantic relationships and developments. Courses range from the social sciences, humanities, fine arts and business comprise the majority of course offerings, with each course having a comparative, trans-Atlantic approach. Students benefit from the possibility to participate in a unique, international educational program, and to move from a monocultural to a global perspective; the opportunity to establish international relationships, both personal and educational; the chance to live in the center of Europe with all of the travel and cultural benefits that attend the location.
