HEADQUARTERS HOTEL

The 1996 Convention Headquarters Hotel is the Hyatt Regency Crown Center, 2345 McGee Street, Kansas City, MO 64108; Tel. (816) 421-1234; Fax. (816) 435-4190. Reservations must be received no later than September 30, 1996. Nearly all meetings, sessions, and events are at the Hyatt Regency. Convention room rates are for Single/Double Per Day: $95.00 (U.S.). Please note that the above rates are net, non-commissionable, and are subject to the current 12.00% per night sales and occupancy tax. Reservations requested after the cut-off date are subject to availability. Rooms may still be available after the cut-off date, but not necessarily at the convention rate. You must identify yourself as a registrant for the Annual Meeting of the American Studies Association, October 31-November 3, 1996, in order to obtain the convention room rates. In making your reservation the Hyatt Regency Crown Center requires that you either enclose a check or money order covering the first night's stay, or send the hotel the entire number of your credit card, including the expiration date and your signature. Deposits will be refunded only if cancellation notification is given at least 24 hours prior to arrival. Hotel meeting rooms and guest rooms are equipped with handicapped facilities.

MEETINGS

Meetings, sessions, and events take place almost exclusively at the Hyatt Regency Kansas City. However, a major event will take place at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art on Saturday, November 2: at 6:00 an open Exhibition Viewing with free hors d'oeuvres, and at 8:00 an evening with writer Calvin Trillin. Transportation for Meeting registrants--who must display their name badge to board shuttle buses--will be provided.

DISABLED PERSONS

The Hyatt Regency Crown Center is in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. So that the Hyatt Regency can better assist persons with special needs, individuals should indicate their specific needs on the hotel reservation form or in an attached letter and include a telephone number where they can be reached. In addition, they should make their reservations as early as possible, and no later than 15 September. If they need additional assistance, they should contact the American Studies Association.

CHILD-CARE INFORMATION

Child care will be available through A1 Tiny Tots Nanny Sitting Services. Serving the Kansas City area for over 30 years, A1 Tiny Tots is bonded and insured and has an MD on call. To arrange for child care and to get a fee schedule, call Director Marilyn McMahon, a registered nurse and a certified teacher, at 816/461-8636, or 816/254-4433. Group rates and individual rates are available. As many others may seek child-care services, it is best to register two weeks in advance.

FLIGHTS

ASA has made arrangements with USAir for discounted airfares on USAir, USAir Express, and USAir Shuttle for travel to and from Kansas City between October 28 and November 6, 1996. The special fare will offer a 5% discount off applicable first class and applicable published fares following all rules and restrictions. A 10% discount off applicable unrestricted coach fares will apply with 7-day advance reservations and ticketing required. These discounts are valid providing all rules and restrictions are met and is applicable for travel from the Continental United States, Bahamas, Canada, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Meeting discounts are not combinable with other discounts or promotions. To obtain this meeting discount, you or your travel agent must call USAir's Meeting and Convention Reservation Office at 800/334-8644; 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Eastern Time. Southwest Airlines, in cooperation with the American Studies Association, is offering attendees to the Annual Meeting of the American Studies Association a discount on both Southwest's low everyday unrestricted fares and most of Southwest's even lower restricted fares for travel on Southwest Airlines. Fares offered by Southwest will be a 10% discount on Southwest's everyday unrestricted fares and a 10% discount on most of Southwest's lower restricted fares. Advance bookings are accepted by Southwest only through dates for which schedules have been finalized, reservations for this event may not yet be available for confirmation. Call no later than October 23, 1996, and REFER TO IDENTIFIER CODE P1606.

TRANSPORTATION

How to Get to the Hyatt Regency Crown Center by Automobile:

From Kansas City International Airport (K.C.I.): Take I-29 South to the 169 South Kansas City exit. Follow 169 South over the river, continue straight on Broadway. Take a left on 20th Street. Make a right on McGee to hotel entrance.

I-70 Eastbound: Take the I-35 South Exit to 20th Street exit. Take a left on 20th Street. Make a right on McGee to hotel entrance.

I-70 Westbound: Take the I-35 Exit to 20th Street exit. Take a left on 20th Street. Make a right on McGee to hotel entrance.

I-35 Southbound:

Take the I-35 South Exit to 20th Street exit. Take a left on 20th Street. Make a right on McGee to hotel entrance.

I-35 Northbound: Take I-435 North to I-70 West. Take the I-35 South Exit to 20th Street exit. Take a left on 20th Street. Make a right on McGee to hotel entrance.

How to Get to the Hyatt Regency from the Kansas City International Airport:

K.C.I. Airport Express (816)243-5000 Provides airport shuttle service for guests of the Hyatt Regency Crown Center. The shuttle may be picked-up curbside at K.C.I. Airport. They depart at 25 and 55 minutes past each hour from 5:55am until 11:55pm. One way tickets are $11.00 and round-trip tickets are $19.00. Children 12 and under are free. Tickets may be purchased at each terminal from a mobile ticket cart, or by paying the driver. If you do not see the ticket cart, dial 5000 on the white courtesy phone for pick-up information.

Return shuttles may be picked-up from the Hyatt front drive at 7 and 37 minutes past each hour, from 5:07am until 6:37pm. Evening service is available by reservation from 7:07pm until 10:37pm. The trip to the airport takes 35-40 minutes by shuttle. Prices for return trips are the same as from K.C.I.

Taxi Cabs Taxi service to and from K.C.I. Airport is regulated by maximum zone fares. Between the Hyatt and K.C.I. the regulated maixmum fare is $29.00. At the airport, taxis can be found curbside at each terminal. The hotel has an exclusive arrangement with Yellow Cab for return trips to the airport. The doorman can assist individuals with taxis at the front drive. Yellow Cab charged a flat rate of $24.00 to K.C.I., from the hotel. They also charge the same rate of $24.00 to the Hyatt from K.C.I. Yellow Cab can be reached at (816)471-5000.

Majestic Limousine Sign up at the bellstand for actual limousine transportation to K.C.I. Airport only. This service departs every hour, at 30 minutes past the hour from 6:30am to 5:30pm, by reservation only. The cost is $12.00 per person if the limo is shared with other passengers, or $20.00 per person if unshared. The maximum number of passengers is six per trip.
